Amish Cold Salve~ Historical recipe by Mrs. John D. Miller

01:00 Aug 28 2013
Times Read: 424

1 oz. Camphor Gum

8 oz. Petroleum jelly or Vaseline

1 oz. Menthol Crystals

Put into pan on low until melted. Place into jars. This will keep for quite some time and is very potent. This was also used for croup, asthma, and any breathing issue. Use small amounts, it is not store bought. This is really strong, and pennies to make.

Since this originally is melted, it would make sense to use this directly on the chest and neck, and also would work for sore muscles as well. It will also work in a room vaporizer if needed. Start with a small amount.

Enjoy and I hope you feel better!

This will also make great gifts for someone feeling under the weather!

As every part of the plant is extremely poisonous, neither leaves, berries, nor root should be handled if there are any cuts or abrasions on the hands. The root is the most poisonous, the leaves and flowers less so, and the berries, except to children, least of all. It is said that an adult may eat two or three berries without injury, but dangerous symptoms appear if more are taken, and it is wiser not to attempt the experiment. Though so powerful in its action on the human body, the plant seems to affect some of the lower animals but little. Homemade Cough Syrup for Children by Franziska

Homemade Cough Syrup

December 5, 2012 by Franziska

My three year old started coughing a couple of nights ago. It was almost unnoticeable during the day yet kept her – and us –up during the night. I was (am) very reluctant to giving her regular cough syrup. A) I don’t think that a regular cold needs any strong medicine. B) I believe that something needs to get out of her system so I really don’t want to suppress it.

After talking to my mom and looking at different approaches in books and online, I came to the conclusion that onion and honey are the two ingredients that are common to treating cough naturally. I try to keep it as simple as possible:

You need:

1 Onion

Honey (1/4-3/4 cup depending on onion size)

I cut one onion into little pieces.

I put the onion pieces in a small pot.

I covered the onion with honey.

I brought it to a boil and simmered it for about 30-40 minutes.

I filtered the onion pieces out.

I stored the honey onion “juice” in a jar in the refrigerator.cough 1

Did it help, you might ask? – Yes, yes, yes. I gave Moxie about one teaspoon in the morning and late afternoon as well as before nap and bedtime. During the day the coughing almost completely went away and during the night it got much less. I call it a success!

(* I’m not a medical professional and only share what worked for me and my family. I’m not qualified to consult but only to inspire you.)

P.S. I used the remaining onion to make some onion spread. I added some water and let it simmer for about two more hours until the onions had pretty much fallen apart. Spread on fresh bread. Yummy!

P.P.S. Letting your child help prepare the syrup makes it MUCH easier to get him or her to take it.

Homemade yogurt in a crockpot!

Homemade Yogurt in a Crockpot – Four Steps

Yogurt is an excellent way to promote proper functioning of your digestive system. As long as you’re eating yogurt that has live active cultures, it contains probiotics (aka beneficial bacteria) that help to balance the microflora in your gut. This makes digestion easier and helps keep your system moving regularly.

Making your own yogurt ensures that you know where your milk came from, and also reduces your reliance on continually buying hundreds of little yogurt containers. By knowing where your milk comes from, you can be sure to choose milk from grass-fed cows. Not only are grass-fed cows generally living a higher-quality, free-ranging life where they are eating what they should be naturally (i.e. grass and not corn or soy which also increases your exposure to GMOs), but grass-fed cows also produce milk that is more nutritionally dense. For example, most grass-fed cow milk contains nearly 5x more conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), an unsaturated fat that may help with heart health and assist with weight loss.

To me, the trickiest part about making my own yogurt is making sure that I have ample time. There have been a few times I went to bed later than I wanted because I was waiting for the milk to cool down (it generally takes at least an hour to heat up and to cool down), but there is nothing difficult about the process. In fact, there are just four easy steps:

1) Add 1/2 gallon of milk to a Crockpot, turn heat on to “High”, and heat the milk to 180-185 degrees F.

IMG_1664

IMG_1666

2) Once the milk has reached 180 degrees, turn off the heat and remove the lid. Let milk cool to 110-120 degrees F.

IMG_1671

3) Add 1/2 cup of yogurt with live active cultures. You can buy a small cup of store-bought organic yogurt for this and then use the yogurt you make for the next batch. Stir the yogurt into the milk, but not too aggressively – swirling might be a better word to use!

IMG_0696

4) Keep the yogurt warm for 8 hours by covering the whole Crockpot with towels and keeping it away from drafts.

IMG_1672I do this in the evening and can then wake up excited for fresh yogurt! I store the remainder in glass jars in the fridge.

Currently, I’m usually eating my yogurt with homemade granola, but I found this photo from last June – it’s making me very excited for the return of strawberries!!

IMG_0802Some additional tips:

You can strain additional whey out to make a Greek-style yogurt.

After a few re-uses of your yogurt as a starter, it begins to get less thick. Get a new starter. You can buy another cup of organic yogurt from the store, or order starter online (Yogurt Starter).

Transferring to the fridge after the 8 hour setting time can help with thickness.

Avoid milk that has been ultra-high temperature pasteurized. I also find that non-homogenized milk works better.

Although all milk will make yogurt, higher fat content milk will thicken better (and help you step away from the 9o’s belief that all fat is bad!).

Enjoy!!

Natural Onion Honey Cough Syrup

02:56 Aug 22 2013
Times Read: 436

Recently, I’ve found myself in the midst of a situation that makes me feel a little uncomfortable — the dreaded “cough zone”.

Do you know what I’m talking about?

It’s the time when you’re peacefully going about your business and then you hear: “COUGH, COUGH, COUGH”, and upon further investigation you realize that all the people around you are clutching boxes of Kleenex as though they’re best friends.

I’m not trying to say anything negative about these people — yes, we all get sick, but I am saying that when I go home I want to take extra preventative measures!

Enter the honey-onion syrup.

This is an old-fashioned remedy that has fallen by the wayside as people have forgotten that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and that we have the power to do preventative healthcare very well in our own homes! It’s also good to use if you’ve already developed a cough, cold, or sore throat.

I can hear some of you thinking: “Honey and onion? Together?”

Why, yes. Although you might not think of these two common food items initially in regard to colds and coughs, they’re both highly medicinal foodstuffs, and it’s easier to consume a dose of medicinal onions this way than eating a plate full of them.

IMG_0148

Onions and other members of the Allium family such as garlic, leeks, chives, and shallots, all contain compounds that are thought to be anti-bacterial, antispasmodic, expectorant, and anti-inflammatory. Add to that the anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal influence of honey and you have a winner food-as-medicine.

To make this remedy, take a whole onion and cut it into half moon slices (note: please use organic onions).

IMG_0154

Place into a pan and cover with honey.

IMG_0162

Warm the mixture until the onions become very soft and you can taste them in the honey. You can also add some chopped garlic to the mix for extra medicinal value (I sure did!).

IMG_0167

To use, just take 1/2 to 1 Tsp as a preventative measure or at the first sign of a cold. If you already have a cold, take 1 Tsp. 3-4 times a day to speed recovery. The syrup can be kept for several weeks to a month in the refrigerator.

And it’s true, despite being around a plethora of sick people, I did not come down with anything! Additionally, Michael had a bit of a tickling cough last week that went away after a few teaspoons of the syrup.

Echinacea Tincture: Boosts your immune system

02:53 Aug 22 2013
Times Read: 437

Given this shift in the wheel of the year and the ever-increasing reality that we’ve moved into the dark half, I think this is a good time to encourage you to get started on this season’s white blood cell boosting echinacea tincture!

Echinacea Tincture

Echinacea growing in my yard.

Now listen carefully, as it is a very complicated process to make this medicine. Ready?

Fill a jar 1/3 full with dried Echinacea angustifolia. Add 100 proof vodka and fill to the very top. Put a cap on, label the jar, and let it sit.

PHEW! Complicated, right? (Kidding!) Making tinctures (a way of getting a concentrated herbal extract) is extremely simple. I’ll repeat the steps:

Fill a jar 1/4 – 1/3 full with Echinacea root. Echinacea purpurea is easier to grow, but Echinacea angustifolia is more medicinal (however, both will work).

Echinacea root filling 1/3 of a jar.

After getting the herb in the jar, fill to the brim with 100 proof alcohol.

Echinacea tincture.

Put a cap on, label your jar, and let it sit for at least 6 weeks. You might want to shake it up a bit for the first week or so (whenever you think of it). Some sources say that the beneficial properties of echinacea continue to be extracted for a full year after tincturing. In general, this can sit for a very long time without any risk of going bad, but feel free to strain and bottle after a few months.

(Note: For fresh roots, dig them up after the first frost, wash, chop, and fill the entire jar with root. Cover with 100 proof alcohol. Also be sure that you’re digging roots from a plant that has been growing for at least 3 years.)

Echinacea is best known for its ability to boost the body’s white blood cell count and is therefore a useful ally when the body encounters all sorts of bacterial infections — sinusitis, UTIs, gum infections, etc. What about colds and flu? People often think about taking echinacea in relation to these viral visitors, but it doesn’t actually help to ward them off — however, it can help with the bacterial complications that often invade our sinuses and throats after colds and flus. Thus, it helps to keep you from staying sick longer.

To use echinacea as an ally, I suggest using Susun Weed’s dosage recommendations:

“1 drop for every 2 pounds of body weight. A dropperful (which looks like half a dropperful) is about 25 drops of tincture. So I use a dropperful for children 25-50 pounds. Two dropperfuls for those weighing 50-100 pounds. Three dropperfuls for up to 150 pounds. Four for up to 200, and so on.

I take the full dose as often as every 1-2 hours in a crisis, or every 3-4 hours if I catch the infection at an early stage. And I expect to see relief within the first 24 hours. As I do, I space the doses further and further apart until all symptoms are gone.” (See full article here.)

And please consider, one of the best ways to stay healthy during this dark half of the year is to stop grumbling about the gray, bundle up, and get outside! Jump, observe, connect — just live with the seasons. I promise it will help you to stay happier and healthier a lot better than staying shut inside and complaining about the weather!

(This post may be shared on any of these blog hops.)

P.S. I am not medically advising you to use this tincture, and I strongly recommend consulting with trained medical professionals when needed!

The Master Tonic by Nancy

Frugal Tip: The Master Tonic

Published March 7, 2012 | By Nancy

Print Friendly

Staying healthy is important. We try to take precautions to stay healthy. We always tried to avoid unnecessary trips to the doctor’s office. Shortly after moving to Vermont a friend sent us the recipe for “The Master Tonic”. At first I was a bit skeptical but made a batch and figured whenever we started to feel under the weather we would take a dose. Whether or not it was a coincidence we managed to stay very healthy! I even had several friends who asked for the recipe! I share it with you today exactly as it was shared with me. Beware when you chop fresh horseradish the fumes are quite powerful and when you chop hot peppers DO NOT rub your eyes, and be sure to wear gloves! When you gargle and swallow with this tonic I swear you can feel fire coursing through your veins!

Master Tonic: A Natural Antibiotic

Pro biotic: antiviral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-parasitical.

Important note: As required by law, this information is provided by the right of free speech for educational purposes only, as natural or non-pharmaceutical remedies or therapies are in some nations today now often deemed illegal. We must therefore insist that if you are ill or have any disease or healthy problem that you contact a medical doctor immediately and ask their advice before trying any formulae, or suggestion given in this material.

This is a modern-day version of a recipe for an extremely powerful natural antibiotic originally used to fight infection like the Bubonic Plague that killed over a third of the world in the 1300’s. Unlike pharmaceutical antibiotics it fights both bacteria and viruses, and is effective against pathogens that have developed immunity to existing drugs.

hot peppers, horseradish, garlic, ginger, vinegar

Master Tonic Ingredients

Master Tonic:

1 part fresh chopped garlic cloves (anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-viral anti-parasitical)

garlic, master tonic, prudent living

Chopped Garlic

1 part fresh chopped white onion, hottest onions available (similar properties to garlic)

1 part fresh gated ginger root (increases circulation to the extremities)

ginger, master tonic

Chopped Ginger

1 part fresh grated horseradish root (increases blood flow to the head)

1 part fresh chopped Cayenne Peppers, the hottest peppers available, i.e. Habanero, African Bird, or Scotch Bonnets etc. (A great blood stimulant)

hot peppers, master tonic

Hot Cherry Peppers

1 bottle raw, unfiltered, unbleached, non-distilled apple cider vinegar

Fill a large glass jar ¾ of the way full with equal parts of the above peeled, fresh, chopped or grated herbs.

garlic, onion, horseradish, ginger, hot peppers

Ingredients layered in a large glass jar.

I use a ½ gallon glass-canning jar and add a cup of each of the above ingredients. Then fill up the rest of the jar to the top with raw, unfiltered, unbleached, non-distilled apple cider vinegar. (It should look milky) shake jar at least once a day for two weeks, and then filter the mixture through a clean piece of cotton (an old t-shirt) or cheesecloth, then bottle and label. If possible make sure all the vegetables and herbs are fresh and organically grown if possible, use dried herbs only in an emergency.

natural antibiotic, master tonic

Master Tonic

This tonic stimulates maximum blood circulation while putting the best detoxifying herbs into the blood. It strengthens the good guys (probiotic) in your system that helps define against infection that broad-spectrum pharmaceutical antibiotics kill. This formula is not just for the sniffles; it has helped to turn around the deadliest of infections.

The dosage is ½ to 1 ounce, two or three times daily (1-2 Tbsps. a time), gargle and swallow. Don’t dilute with water. For ordinary infections, a dropperful taken 5-6 times a day will deal with most conditions. It can be used during pregnancies, is safe for children (use smaller doses) and as a food is completely non-toxic. Make up plenty; it does not need refrigeration and lasts indefinitely without any special conditions.

(I believe the friend that shared this with me got it from The University of Natural Healing, Dr. Richard Schultzs’ adaption of Dr. Christopher’s’ original anti-plague tonic)
